13 Baristas #1

This is the first installment of the ongoing series "13 Baristas" by artist, writer, and Red Wedge editor Adam Turl. You can find more of Adam's work on Evicted Art Blog as well as his website  — Craig E. Ross

In 2018, six months after the ________________ uprising was crushed by the National Guard, a group of low-wage workers, many of whom worked in coffee chains, formed the “13 Baristas Art Collective.” Its members were art school dropouts or had pretensions to be poets or writers. Some were involved in the Starbucks Workers Union and later the fast food strikes of 2014. They collectively produced a series of paintings, art objects and texts, working out their dreams of collective and individual revenge and redemption. While claiming a sort of anarchism the collective was actually dominated by the charistmatic Baristas “F” and “G”. “F” was a former regional manager of the ________________ coffee chain, who had once thought himself a “great writer.” After being demoted to the floor he became the principle agitator at his store for a higher minimum wage. “G” worked as a receptionist nearby. She had dropped out of art school and was the main architect of the “13 Baristas Art Collective.” “G” imagined they were creating the culture of a coming post-apocalyptic America. While they claimed thirteen members they never had more than five active members at any one time.

A Call for Submissions

With the relaunch of our new website, Red Wedge magazine is excited to announce the new blog: "Red Wedge Comix"!

Political cartooning is a dying (if not already dead) art form. A combination of cheap metaphors, lack of humor, lack of nuance, and reactionary politics has led to arguable the most boring and repetitive medium in comics history.

At the same time, alternative comics has seen a big jolt in recent years due to the amazing innovation of cartoonists with immeasurably diverse content and styles.

The hope of "Red Wedge Comix" is to use the diverse and ever expanding and changing medium of alternative comics to restore the revolutionary imagination to the comic medium.

Explicitly political, socialist/anti-capitalist, anti-racist, feminist, anti-fascist, LGBTQ liberation, and decolonization comic themes are encouraged.

If you are interested in publishing your work online through Red Wedge Comix please email your submissions to dumpsterpizzapress@gmail.com

Also if you are interested in publishing longer serialized comics (either, monthly or weekly) please send proposals to this email address as well.

All submissions should be RGB color format and 300ppi size

No racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or other comics that reinforce oppression will be accepted.
