Najawa, A Story of Palestine

"Najawa, A Story of Palestine" by Michelle Sayles was created in collaboration with Vermonters for a Just Peace in Palestine/Israel (VTJP). VTJP has been calling for a boycott of Ben & Jerry's until the company stops selling their ice cream in the illegal settlements in Palestine (for more info about that campaign, check out their website). This comic is an awareness piece about the history of the conflict told through the lens of a woman born in 1948, however it was created as an outreach tool for VTJP.  Najawa's character is based off of stories from oral history accounts, documentaries, and other texts that Sayles synthesized together into the following large-scale comic panels.  Sayles is currently working on a zine that will give more information about the history and fill in some of the gaps in the story's timeline. Michelle Sayles is an artist and community organizer living in Burlington, VT. You can find more of her work on her blog. - Craig E. Ross
